Facial Rejuvenation FAQs

I see you offer several facial rejuvenation services. How do I know which one is right for me?

This depends on your overall goals and how quickly you want to seeing lasting results. In general, our micro needling services are the most potent, followed by nano needling, then facial acupuncture, then lastly facial cupping and gua sha. Call or email for a more customized recommendation.

How often do I need to receive treatment for the quickest results?

It depends on what we’re trying to accomplish and how much repair your skin requires in order to achieve your goals. In general, our micro and nano needling treatments offer the most potent and therefore quickest and long-lasting results. They can address fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation (age or liver spots), acne and acne scars, decrease pore size and improve skin tone. A full treatment protocol for micro and nano needling is between 4-8 bi-weekly treatments, with 1-2 “tune-up” treatments per year thereafter.

Facial Acupuncture can produce similar results and is often used in conjunction with micro needling treatments. Contact us directly to discuss specific recommendations.

What is micro needling?

Micro needling is the most potent facial rejuvenation treatment offered at Golden Root Acupuncture. It’s also gets the quickest and most long-lasting results. Micro needling rejuvenates the skin by stimulating the natural production of collagen and elastin. Treatments can address fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, reduce acne and acne scars, decrease pore size, improve skin tone, and make the skin smoother. Micro needling the scalp can even help regrow hair!

What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

This protocol, created by Michelle Gellis, brightens skin, releases tension in the face, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and treats the overall constitution of the person. As with any acupuncture treatment, facial acupuncture helps balance your hormones, reduce stress, improve digestion and sleep and boosts your immune system, which naturally improve the quality of your skin. The goal is to get you to not only LOOK younger, but FEEL younger, naturally.

During a facial rejuvenation acupuncture treatment, small, fine needles are inserted into aging facial areas, to release tension and improve skin tone. We end the session with 30 relaxing minutes of facial cupping and gua sha.

What is facial cupping and gua sha?

Facial cupping is a wonderful way to reduce wrinkles, plump up the lips, treat dry skin, exfoliate, and move fresh, oxygenated blood throughout the areas of the face. Small suction cups gently slide across the skin, for an instant feeling of relaxation. Gua Sha is a very gentle technique to reduce tension, decrease puffiness and promote the movement of qi and fresh oxygenated blood in the treated areas.

This is a great stand alone treatment, or you can add it to the end of another one for your favorite Golden Root Acupuncture services.

What’s the difference between micro needling and microdermabrasion?

These two treatments offer similar results of increased collagen production, fine line and wrinkle reduction and many other benefits. However, microdermabrasions remove the first layer of skin, leaving your skin incredibly vulnerable and sensitive to the sun, wind, cold and beauty products. Micro needling keeps the first layer of skin in tact, which means there’s less down time (or healing time). You’ll still need to stay out of sun and refrain from using any topicals, but only for 12-24 hours. Often times, after a microdermabrasion, the healing time is much longer.

What’s the difference between micro needling and nano needling?

Both micro and nano needling treatments use a devise called an AcuMicro Pen. This special pen holds 2 different types of needle cartridges (micro or nano).

The micro needling cartridge contains 12 very short, fine needles used to penetrate deeper into the layers of skin at varying speeds. As the pen gently glides over the skin, it creates micro-channels that encourages the production of collagen and elastin. It also allows for deeper absorption of serums and moisturizers. Areas treated by the micro needles are the cheeks, chin, laugh lines and forehead. Only 1 micro needling session per month is recommended, with nano needling treatments scheduled bi-weekly in between.

The nano needling cartridge also has the ability to create micro-channels and encourage collagen and elastin production, however the needles are much shorter and only penetrate the most superficial layer of the skin. These treatments are scheduled bi-weekly, and are most frequently used in high-sensitive areas such as around the eyes, nose, and lips.

What should I expect during and after a micro/nano needling?

We begin our session with an overview of goals, review your health history, and administer acupuncture needles to the body. Moving onto the micro-needling portion of the session, we cleanse the face, apply numbing cream and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the body. Many high-quality skincare products include it as the main ingredient because of it’s ability to deeply hydrate the skin. We use a pen from AcuMicro, which has a cartridge of 12 fine acupuncture needles spaced evenly apart, with adjustable speeds, to create micro-channels in the skin. The pen glides over the skin, and the hyaluronic acid penetrates the treated areas, hydrating the skin and stimulating new production of collagen and elastin. We then apply a customized serum, which is made in-house to fit your skin type. Finally, a cooling aloe mask is used to wind down the treatment as the needles on the body are removed. This treatment takes 90 minutes for new patients and 60 minutes for established patients.

After Care: Your skin will appear red, feel hot, and you may be slightly swollen after your treatment. This should dissipate between 12 – 48 hours. The redness and feeling of heat may feel like a moderate to severe sunburn, so it’s very important to stay out of the sun and heat for 48 hours. Use gentle cleansers and hydrating serums after your treatment. Avoid exfoliating on treated areas.
